Work packages vs. tasks
Successful project management thrives on clear structures. In Octaved Flow, we therefore deliberately distinguish between two work units: work packages and tasks. This distinction is not a minor detail, but rather the key to a stable project plan that gives each team member the necessary flexibility.
Definitions
Work package: A higher-level work unit that defines a specific goal within a project. Work packages form the backbone of the project plan and are created and managed by project managers or department heads.
Task: A smaller, individual work unit within a work package. Tasks are created and planned by employees themselves, allowing them to structure their work package in the way that suits them best.
Why this separation is so important
Work packages are often directly linked to the goals and deadlines of clients. To ensure that the project plan remains reliable, only project managers and department heads should create and assign work packages. This prevents critical planning principles from being changed unnoticed.
Within this clear structure, employees still retain their autonomy: they divide their assigned work packages into tasks independently - in a way that suits their working style.
The result: The project plan remains protected, and everyone in the team works as efficiently as possible.
